The Legend of the Newburgh Fire Department In 1887,
Newburgh was ravaged by fire, But the courageous villagers were driven
with desire, And soon were an army of determined re-builders. Soon the village was again a contender for the county seat, But Napanee, established facilities were hard to beat. Though the village had many municipal elections, There was no front page concern for fire protection. The years filed past with an occasional fire interruption, Until in 1947 a meeting was called by a few business connections. They by-passed council since they had been forewarned, And at the close of the meeting a dream was born, "No", they had no money, just the right connections, So the boys all signed the "note" and asked no questions. Soon with borrowed money, they bought an army water truck, And soon the members grew and no mention of a buck. They all knew what the dream needed and worked in common accord, They filled cisterns, pumped out wells and bought as they could afford. Soon the townships round about respected their organization And asked for fire protection and gave generous, appreciable donations. Success has never been without the dissenters objections, But eventually the village fathers offered their connections. Some counselors joked as they gained the public's thanks, And now the fire department had money in the bank. As they proved themselves the membership continued to grow And they soon discovered so did their talents pro's, The dream could now be enhanced by talent shows, So with repeat performances of good music and humor, the bank account glowed. Since the mid 60's time has erased or replaced many faces, A much-needed new fire graces town hall place. With several new up-dated vehicles, Newburgh's in the big league now, And Newburgh's increasing population is grateful to the founders who dreamed of that "now" At the occasion of the departments, 50th anniversary event, 'Twas a memorable time of refection of the Founder's intent. This legend should never fade from the annals of the past, And continue to inspire devoted men who can make it last. In memory of Newburgh's very first fire department we proudly record: Vernon Simkins originator of the dream and fire chief Harvey Card-assistant chief, and devoted supporters-Ford Fenwick, Frank Smith, Jack Lynch, Ben Sutton, Harold Wood, Leo O'Connor, Alec Watson and Basil Balance. Many other fine men soon followed that beginning and are recorded on the records at the fire department office. Special thanks to Kingston Fire Chief, Victor Brightman who vigorously supported the originators and often offered much appreciated advice Ivon Simkins December 1999 |
